If Theresa May can only "win" a referendum by stopping it taking place, then...

Just a quick note to let you know that I have a new article at the TalkRadio website about Theresa May's outrageous bid to overturn the long-standing British government policy that Scotland can only remain in the UK by democratic consent.  You can read the article HERE.

    5. Hello Jack, it's a great pity you stopped reading, because that means you're not in a position to criticise the article. If you want to be taken seriously when you criticise something, you actually have to read it first, otherwise an objective person will spot straight away that you're playing silly partisan games.

Just a little tip, old chap. For your own sake, I do hope you'll take it on board. You have a good day now.

      Delete
    6. Where were you Jack when Salmond was being compared to Mussolini and the SNP are regularly called Nazis by British nationalists?

      Delete
    7. 'Silly partisan games' says the man who compared a democratically elected leader of one of the world's oldest democracies to an African despot. Right-you-are, James. Carry on with your anti-British bile. I'm sure if you spew enough of it out it'll help convert those who are swaying, and who need to be 'wooed'. You seem to think that point-scoring is more important than vote-winning.

      Delete
    8. If by 'point-scoring' you mean that I think telling the truth is more important than pumping out propaganda, there's more than a grain of truth in that. If that seems somehow odd to you, then perhaps I just roll a little differently from you. But if you think that my telling a few inconvenient truths about Theresa May is going to backfire, I fear you might be underestimating the voters. If May didn't want the anti-democratic charge to stick, she really should have respected the democratic process.

As for the bizarre 'anti-British' line you've now used twice, I can only assume you still haven't even got past the third sentence of the article, and don't realise that my point is that May has reversed a long-standing British government policy, which until very recently was to respect Scotland's right to self-determination.

You'll forgive me if I haven't stopped chortling at the spectacle of someone turning purple with rage about an article he hasn't actually read!

      Delete
    9. Oh, I never turn purple with rage. My facial features resemble puzzled incredulity. Biased and hyperbolic language does that to me, you see.

I've now read your 'article', and have the following comments:

'From the moment Ms May made her announcement, the notion that Scotland is part of the UK by its own consent was converted from reality to fiction.'

The only fiction here is that which you have written. You, like every other Nat in the country, are conflating the needs of the SNP with that of Scotland. The two are not the same. Not even close. Only a small minority of people are agitating for another go at a referendum. Only two-and-a-bit years ago we voted to remain part of the UK, and that means the majority of the people want to remain British. I've no doubt that you would seek to counter this by making such trite statements as 'the game's changed' or/and '62% voted to remain in the EU'. Did you ever stop to think about how many Remain voters also voted No? Do you think they'd like their votes co-opted into another charge-over-the-cliff for indyref2? No, of course they wouldn't. No-one's bothered to ask them. Their votes are being appropriated to further Sturgeon's teenage dream.

'Even glossing over the fact that the 2014 decision was made on the demonstrably bogus basis that it would keep Scotland within the EU'

Tish and pish! If Scotland had voted to go independent it would have needed to apply to become a member. This guff that I hear spouted from Nats is fantasy.

'Indeed, the very fact that Brussels wasn’t able to veto Britain’s second referendum on EU membership is a useful demonstration of the difference between a political union that respects national sovereignty and parliamentary democracy, and a political union that does not.'

Another worn SNP refrain. The two aren't even analagous. Scotland is part of a 'country' known as the UK (with a shared history, culture and language stretching back centuries). The UK is part of a coalition of European countries with little shared culture, history, language etc. Trying to draw parallels between the two set-ups is barrel-scraping, and you know it.

Apart from that, GREAT ARTICLE, JAMES.

      Delete
    10. "Only a small minority of people are agitating for another go at a referendum"

That "small minority" is 49.3% of the entire population, according to the latest Panelbase poll for the Sunday Times and LBC.

"Only two-and-a-bit years ago we voted to remain part of the UK, and that means the majority of the people want to remain British."

Schoolboy error, I'm afraid. People were explicitly exhorted to vote No for reasons other than commitment to British nationalism - not least the prospect of remaining within the EU. Given the closeness of the result, it seems highly improbable that your teary-eyed devotion to Blighty is shared by a majority of the public.

"Did you ever stop to think about how many Remain voters also voted No?"

Of course I do - those are the important people. I want to hear from THEM, in a referendum, how they would like the incompatibility of their pro-UK and pro-EU votes to be resolved. You, by contrast, want to play the tinpot dictator and tell those people that their vote to remain within the EU is irrelevant.

      "Tish and pish!"

Odd, then, that you seem unable to rebut the point you are actually complaining about, and hurriedly change the subject instead.

"The UK is part of a coalition of European countries with little shared culture, history"

Apart from the Auld Alliance and a long period of dual Scottish/French nationality, of course.

Apart from these minor quibbles, GREAT REPLY, "JACK".
