It's a statistical tie as "remarkable" Ipsos-Mori TELEPHONE poll puts support for independence at heady 48%

Should Scotland be an independent country?

Yes 48%
No 52%

More details to follow eventually.  I'm physically blogging this from the Davis Cup semi-final in Glasgow, so it's not straightforward...

The UK union flag that accurately represents Scotland's political influence would be a big St Georges Cross with the saltire only taking up 8.3% space in the background.

Submissions to Theresa May’s child sex abuse inquiry 'accidentally' deleted

Victims of alleged child abuse who submitted testimonies to website between 14 September and 2 October deleted due to 'technical blunder'

Information provided by alleged child abuse victims to the overarching inquiry set up by Theresa May has been deleted due to a blunder, it has emerged.

Submissions sent through an online form to the inquiry between 14 September and 2 October were “instantly and permanently deleted” on Thursday before they reached staff.

The information had been sent to the “share your experience” section of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse (IICSA) website, set up for victims and survivors wanting to share their experiences with officials working on the probe.

  3. Nothing to do with hatred of the English. All to do with where to place Government to best serve the people. Answer as close as possible to where the people affected are. So in some cases it requires devolution to local councils, others to a Scottish Government (or English Region if you live there) and sometimes it involves giving up certain rights to a supranational body such as the UN or EU, as with Human Rights.

GWC you are emotionally obsessed with unionism instead of looking at the big picture. The union served us well for a long time but it has reached its use-by-date. Time to seek a new way forward and let go of the past.

The EU controls a lot less functions than Wastemonster. We would only go in to the EU if it suited Scotlands needs and remember we can always ScootExit if we don't like it. At the moment however we are stuck in a one sided union where the SE england sucks all the wealth from the other areas including North England. We have a way out they do not. We could always make a new offer to join a union with England/wales but the terms would have to be significantly improved from the current They win Scotland loses model.

    1. The last referendum used the Scottish Parliamentary voters register. Along with an inclusion of 16 and 17 year olds under the same rules.
Basically that means any person resident and registered to vote in Scotland. If you were say a generally resident individual but working outside Scotland you could vote via postal ballot. But not say if you were the 97 year old woman in London, born in Glasgow but taken south when she was 3 months old never to return even for a visit. She complained to a newspaper in 2014 that her democratic rights were being infringed.

So only those normally resident in Scotland seems to be the only feasible way.

  7. A poll of people's preferred scenarios has been done.

    33% Independent Scotland in EU
    11% Independent Scotland outside EU
28% Scotland in UK & EU
23% Scotland in UK & outside EU
    5% DK

    33+28 = 61% stay
    11+23 = 34% leave

    33+11 = 44% yes
    28+23 = 51% no

At first glance, this might look like bad news(EU & indy support slippage). But it looks like a ticking bomb for the UK as long as Brexit means Brexit. I'd love to recommission this poll and ask a follow-up question, with the third option(stay in both unions) removed.

Sort of AV style - see where that 28% goes when it becomes clear they can't have both. Until that breakdown is discovered, we're basically looking at 44-23%.

Greater potential more will favour the UK than the EU, yes... but six percent away from 50 is a heck of a lot closer. We only need a quarter of that group to favour the EU over the UK.

This isn't ancient history. The man in question - Arthur Donalson - met many of the current generation of SNP leaders and was on good terms with them before his passing. So the nazi label is not entirely inappropriate.

The modern Scottish independence movement is 84 years old, dating back to the 1928 formation of the National Party of Scotland, forerunner to the SNP. It is a peaceful, inclusive, civic and democratic movement – to the best of our knowledge, and almost uniquely, not a single life has been lost in pursuit of Scottish independence.

Despite this, so-called “Unionists” (more properly described as British nationalists) still regularly try to portray independence campaigners as violent racists. As recently as a few days ago, one prominent Labour activist frequently employed as a commentator on BBC Scotland political shows attempted to perpetuate baseless (but oft-repeated by Unionists) 70-year-old smears that the former SNP leader Arthur Donaldson was a Nazi sympathiser engaged in attempts to collaborate with the Germans during WW2, sabotage the British war effort and set up a Vichy-style government in Scotland. These claims were cited, astonishingly, as evidence of “the SNP’s fascist past”.

The allegations in the MI5 files, which were first released in 1994 after Donaldson's death, were absolutely denied by his widow, Violet Donaldson, and by the surviving leaders of the SNP at the time. Donaldson was never charged, and no evidence for the MI5 allegations has ever been produced."

Meanwhile, you'll never see a Loyalists on TV without a cheap lie about Independence being unviable or that somehow Scotland will keep paying for England (and therefore have a deficit) once Independent.

Only one side is putting out a message. But it's not getting any traction. Loyalists should be very, very worried.

      Delete
    4. You're very easily pleased, Aldo. You were happy when you thought Remain were going to win, because that would decrease the chances of independence. When you belatedly accepted that Leave had a chance, you were still happy, because Brexit would also decrease the chances of independence. When independence happens, you'll be happy, because on Planet Aldo even independence itself will decrease the chances of independence. You're probably the only unionist who won't be needing any happy pills as the years go by.

    5. You've got to see the good in everything James! I'll happily admit I was wrong about the EU referendum. But I was also wrong about its aftermath. I too suspected a big boost in support for independence. But it never happened and - the more you think about it - the more unrealistic a referendum seems. Brexit needs to be sorted out first. Christ knows how long that could take.

"..even independence itself will decrease the chances of independence.." - this is actually possible, in a way. If we got for Scoxit and then everything falls apart and the negotiations are a complete failure, then it may just be that a unionist government is elected just in time to overturn the referendum result and save the union. Unlikely - but it's just one path that we could end up taking in the next few years. There are many things that can derail indy - and right up until the exact moment that the union flag is lowered and we officially become an independent state, nothing is certain. Confirmed! UN is investigating UK’s ‘grave violations’ of disabled people’s rights

The United Nations is carrying out an unprecedented inquiry into “systematic and grave violations” of disabled people’s human rights by the UK government, Disability News Service (DNS) can finally confirm.

DNS revealed last August that the UK appeared to have become the first country to face a high-level inquiry by the UN’s committee on the rights of persons with disabilities (CRPD).

The committee said last summer, when approached by DNS, that it was not allowed to say whether the inquiry was underway.

But DNS is now in a position to state definitively that the inquiry is taking place, and has been underway since January 2014.

The inquiry was triggered by the grassroots campaigning organisation Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC), which had grown increasingly concerned by the disproportionate impact of the coalition’s cuts on disabled people.

DPAC first contacted CRPD in 2012 and began to submit evidence about the coalition’s cuts and reforms in early 2013, with its request for an inquiry considered by the committee behind closed doors in April 2013.

  20. These polls are to be taken lightly. It is extremely likely that many no voters will now be yes voters, due to brexit. They are the ones who will suffer from brexit most. No more fancy holidays in the south of France, or at least not so many as it will be too costly. Their kids studying abroad, gone. Research grants, funding jobs in universities etc, gone. Easy, free trade for your small or medium size business, gone. Mostly middle class. the EU funding and freedom of movement, trade etc will not be welcome at all. Also lots folks' well educated grown up kids live in London, want easy travel, access to jobs etc,in other EU countries.

Just after the brexit vote had a young friend of my sons here and she said that all of her family and friends were now yes, all middle class, do not want out of the EU.

It will happen, and the. unionists are terrified. Watch out for false flag amd power cuts this coming winter. They will do anything to keep Scotland shackled, too much of an asset to let go that easily!

Can't wait to say bye bye union, and england, please stand on your own two feet, no more thieving Scotland's resources! Bye.
