Why is Corbyn being challenged by someone who finished FOURTH in the deputy leadership election last year?

Labour deputy leadership election 2015, second round :

Tom Watson 42.2%
Stella Creasy 21.4%
Caroline Flint 18.4%
Angela Eagle 17.9%

That was just ten months ago, and I'm not aware that Eagle has had a personality transplant since then.  It does seem phenomenally improbable that someone who couldn't even beat Caroline Flint in an internal party election is going to become Prime Minister of this country, but who knows.  You have to give her credit for extreme optimism if nothing else.

  2. I notice the talented Owen Smith is'nt going to challenge Corbyn,he,like the others will wait to see what happens after Eagles challenge. I was dissappointed when he spoke out against Corbyn, he appeared to be one of the few decent and thoughtful people around Corbyn.

  3. Is this not the stalking horse strategy?

    1. I don't see how that works. If Corbyn defeats Eagle by even the narrowest of margins, he'll be stronger than he was before, not weaker. They can't pull this stunt every year.

    2. As I understand the strategy, it is not the purpose of the stalking horse to win just test how strong support is for any challenger. The fat with the glasses seems to not want any end to this trouble judging by the Guardian story. "Sabotage" was the word used. If Eagle is crushed, Watson can step back never having lost face. If she does better than expected, he can come forward.

    3. That strategy doesn't make any sense. If Eagle is defeated by Corbyn, the coup is over and Corbyn is safe until the general election - he'll have just been elected twice in the space of twelve months. The plotters' only remaining option would be to form a new party.

    4. Sorry I was working on the assumption more candidates could become involved. If its a straight two person competition as you say then I'm completely wrong.

    5. We still can't be sure who is behind this episode. Certainly not Eagle.

I don't think it's too far-out to consider that some kind of uber arch-Blairite is sitting next to Corbyn in the hopes of becoming PM after him and setting fire to the rest of the PLP because he or she is the only one of that awful brigade with enough brains to recognise the NuLabour deal is over.

The one true Blairite principle is power, not neoliberalism. The idiot yes-men Blair and Brown parachuted into safe seats don't realise that - otherwise they'd have become threats to B&B!

  4. Why? Because it is all part of the US plan to destroy any chance of a UK party going off message.

The appalling performance by Sturgeon since the EU vote seems to be resonating with even nat si supporters. Her drivel about keeping the pound and staying in the EU without any border with England is incompetant.
It is time the Nat sis just told the truth to the Scottish people. Independence means independence and completely leaving the Union pound and all.

Clearly you are the willie fondler. And why would you Nats sis concern yourselves with the Labour Party. Probably some of you abandoned Labour for the control freak right wing Nat si party.
Time will pass and Labour will recover.

    3. Too true. For me, Corbyn is the best leader they've had for years. He is calm, reasoned and polite compared to the arrogant, sneering Public Schoolboy Cameron. (What a pity he is so out of touch regarding Scotland).

Anyway, if they want to tear themselves apart, good. The more the Unionist parties disintegrate, the better.

  8. The implication would be that anyone in the PLP had thought about any of this. They're batshit crazy. They feel Corbyn makes them unelectable so they choose to undermine the party's entire public profile and hand the shambolic Tories a free pass during their biggest crisis since the early 90s as a way to discover that they can't even get rid of him. If I'd ever thought about voting Labour, this would now put me off. I'm sure I can't be the only one.

I wonder if any of them considered how electable they might be if they'd tried to work with him in improving his weak spots rather than threatening a coup since before he even won the leadership.

  9. My suspicion is that it's a precursor to the party splitting.

Once she has lost they'll claim that the current system is irrevocably broken and the only option is to split - and try and take the party name with them.

  10. Corbyn has to get tough and now is the time. No more nice guy - he has tried to keep the party together, but now he has to grasp the nettle. Remove the party whip from them and tell them to get stuffed. The people will support him - most of these Blairites are very unpopular in their constituencies (contrary to their private beliefs).

Corbyn needs to grow a pair and get laid into them. They cannot say they were not given a chance. Now is the time to fight back.

  13. Labour splits---then what?

One half will have no money, the other half, a very antagonistic media (this didn't stop the SNP) and limited public appeal--see above; bad media!
I suspect there is a view among the "Parliamentarians" that there is support and sympathy for their plight---that, unlike the Lib Dumbs, they will always "be there". I think they are in for a big gunk! The Corbynista's have the troops on the ground!

    1. If Leadsom becomes PM, though, we're really through the looking glass. She too is regarded with contempt by her MPs and the media. If the next GE is her against a Corbyn/Eagle-led Labour party, I wouldn't have a clue which way to bet.

    1. GWC2 is a lady called Nadine from Essex. Sometimes she has too many Malibu and Pineapple juices and starts messaging websites. She has a thing for Scottish men after getting drunk at a wedding in Crieff and leaving her hotel room open. Sadly, she had no gentleman callers and feels bitter. Poor Nadine.
