Three simple reasons why the Labour plotters will be more responsible than Corbyn for a heavy general election defeat

1) Even in southern England, there is one factor that is a far bigger voter-repellent than a radical left party leader - and that's disunity.  According to YouGov, Labour went from enjoying a 3% lead in late April to being 11% behind by mid-July.  Corbyn was leader in both the 'before' and 'after' photos, so self-evidently he's unlikely to be responsible for the slump.  The only things that have changed since April are that Theresa May is enjoying a honeymoon period, and the right-wing of the Labour party have needlessly started a civil war.

2) Some of the plotters claim that they have no problem with Corbyn's policies, but only with the man himself.  If that's genuinely the case, an obvious deal was available that probably would have been acceptable to all sides - a change in the leadership nomination rules to allow Corbyn to step down (perhaps in a year or two) safe in the knowledge that a more charismatic alternative left candidate like John McDonnell or Clive Lewis would have no difficulty getting on the ballot paper, and would probably become leader.  The fact that none of the plotters seem to have even seriously contemplated that possibility tells you all you need to know - this isn't about electability, it's a destructive ideological crusade against the radical left.

3) For all the mythology surrounding the 1983 election, the Labour right actually have a much longer and more ignominious track record of losing elections than the radical left.  It was the right, not the left, that lost the 2010 and 2015 elections.  The right were also responsible for the landmark defeats in 1979 and 1992, and arguably also in 1987 (Neil Kinnock was midway on his journey from the soft left to the right by then, although admittedly he was still nominally in favour of unilateral nuclear disarmament).  And the right can't entirely escape responsibility for the 1983 calamity either - it seems undeniable that the Tory majority would have been much more modest had the SDP split not taken place.

*  *  *

It takes a strong Westminster Bubble angle before Mike "can't be arsed" Smithson will pay the slightest attention to a Scottish poll, and sure enough he's beside himself with excitement about a new full-scale Scottish poll from YouGov showing that Jeremy Corbyn has worse personal ratings among people who voted Labour in 2015 than among the electorate at large.  But for my money, this poll tells us far more about the character of Labour's rump support in Scotland than it does about Jeremy Corbyn's prospects.  Corbyn actually has comparatively good ratings among people who voted SNP in 2015, which is perfectly logical, because that group contains many traditional Labour voters who had switched to the SNP for the first time ever.  It's clear that Corbyn's leadership hasn't been sufficient to bring them back into the fold, but the idea that they're more likely to be won over by a New Labour-type leader is fanciful in the extreme.

It's also telling that Ruth Davidson has much, much better personal ratings among 2015 Labour voters than Nicola Sturgeon does, in spite of Sturgeon's impeccable social democratic credentials, and the fact that she's more popular than Davidson among the general population.  That makes no sense at all unless the legacy of "Jackanory" Jim Murphy's leadership has been to transform Labour's support into a narrowly-based, centre-right, hard-line unionist sect.  (I hesitate to use the word 'cult', but...)

Theresa May's showing in this poll is being portrayed as reasonably good, but you have to be very cautious about polls conducted during a political honeymoon.  For example, an early Scottish poll after John Major replaced Margaret Thatcher showed Tory support back above 30% for the first time in many years, leading Bernard Ingham to obnoxiously claim that everything was back to normal and that the only reason for the Scottish Tories' travails had been the sexism of voters north of the border (including female voters, presumably).

You don't have to look far to spot the warning signs for May - even at the height of her honeymoon, more Scottish voters say she is dislikeable than say she is likeable.  Perhaps the most significant finding is that 54% of respondents say she will either be a worse Prime Minister than Cameron, or no better.  When you bear in mind how awful Cameron's personal ratings in Scotland have been, that may be a clue as to where she is headed in the not-too-distant future.

  2. I think you are right about Labour in Scotland.
Our MP only got over the line in 2015 by the skin of his teeth through gathering Tory unionist voters who backed Labour for that reason alone and he knows it.
That is all they have left to offer Scottish voters....hard core British Unionism and if that means supping with the Tories, then so be it.

The Blairites never learned the obvious lessons from calamity Clegg and his ostrich faction and are in fact repeating some of the most amusing ones.

The first being that triangulating on the tories and moving as close as possible to them is a actually a surefire way to destroy your own party since you can never hope to out-tory the tories. (for SLAB brainless unionism before everything else is just as destructive to them)

The second being that, no matter how bad you think things are, they can and will get worse. Particularly if you keep doing the dumb same shit over and over again. Like SLAB's Blairite 'leaders' and minions who somehow still think shrieking "SNPBAD!" will turn things around for them. (and like all those in the westminster bubble who mistakenly thought Clegg and his party were bound to do better at the GE than the polling showed when in fact they did worse. As some of us warned)

It is however a mistake to label some of the inept Blairite's actions as an ideological crusade when it's far more clear cut than that.

      It's simple careerism.

The most vocal and odious of the Blairites have watched and are watching their power drain away with every passing day.

That's only going to continue since Owen Smith is as every bit as ludicrous as his history and past pronouncements show him to be.

No amount of pitiful Blairite/BBC/media spin will ever make him a popular 'man of the people' and you would have to be blind not to realise it.

It's that complete lack of career prospects that is driving the most batshit crazy of the Blairites into hysterical ranting about "trots" and "entryists" as they rip their own party apart in the name of "electability" without a scintilla of self-awareness or irony.

Ask SLAB how many of their former MPs are now enjoying the 'fruits' of their subservient complacent arselicking? A scant handful made it to the 'promised land' of Lordships, baubles and highly paid lobbyist/media careers after they destroyed their own party.

So it will be for those sheeplike Labour MPs throwing their lot in with the Blairite fools desperate to keep some small grip of power as it drains away from them.

Those who side with Owen will be lucky if a mere handful emerge from the wreckage with a nice Lordship and a guaranteed future lucrative job. The rest are done. Finished. A life outside politics/retirement awaits.

They will be remembered, if they are remember at all, as the kind of unscrupulous unprincipled liars who willingly threw their party into complete and utter chaos for their own personal greed and ambition.

    3. Incompetent Blairites of Mass Destruction #ChickenCoupJuly 27, 2016 at 11:14 PM

It is also a mistake to ascribe the right-wing press and BBC/ITV/Sky obvious hostility to Corbyn and out of touch fawning regard of the Blairites as something done only to please or mollify the Blairites.

In fact, the Blarites are being taken for a ride every bit as much as the lib dems were under Clegg. The Blairites are also plenty stupid enough not to realise it.

The primary reason the westminster bubble media and westmisnter establishment want Corbyn out of the way and some witless Blairite in is because May and the Cameroons/remianiners NEED compliant Blairites to rubber stamp any old bollocks under the fatuous guise of the 'National Interest'.

If that means yet more austerity on the poorest (and let's not kid ourselves, IT WILL) Or if it means ridiculous 'back of the envelope' authoritarianism', wars, welfare dismantling, NHS reforms/privatisation. Or, most likely, if it means pushing for the most Brexit light options - then that WILL require a compliant and willing Blairite leadership and followers keen to suck up to the tories, not Corbyn.

The tories majority is tiny, a snap election was ruled out and the hardline Brexiteer pushback has already begun.

The absurd and corrupt corporate stooge Liam Fox is already issuing hardline Brexiteer demands to May like a man who has half and eye on yet another future tory leadership contest.

This will only intensify over the coming months.

It would also explode into a full blown remainer/Brexiteer split and war if May was dumb enough to call a snap election. That election would be necessity HAVE to be fought on what Brexit actually means.

No way to avoid that tricky little problem for the westminster bubble twits but, then again, it's obviously going to happen anyway.

It's all just a question of when.

Bias is, "a prejudice", but "a desire to please the boss", is the handmaiden of collision, and collusion IS conspiracy. This excuse that journos are just doing what they are told, that they were only following orders doesn't wash. Whatever the imperatives driving their decision, they remain personally responsible for their part in any coordinated effort of jiggery pokery. They are prosecuting an agenda, and whether it be their own or that of their boss, they are players and answerable for their actions.

Liam Fox says no Brexit until 2019. Are those who voted for it going to be ok with that?

Very quietly, Liam Fox admits that everything he's said since he entered government is nonsense.

I advocate a knighthood and a permanent statue in parliament square for Nigel Farage who exposed the corrupt EU gravy train that was milking the working classes.

I advocate that there should be an annual public holiday to be held in perpetuity to honour Nigal Farage. And that all major cities in the UK should give him the keys and Freedom of the City.

A quarter of sample from outside Scotland?

How about this for a duff prediction - brexit will boost support for Scottish independence. You people were wetting yourselves at the prospect. However, going by the poll results you have been at pains to avoid discussing, that hasn't happened.

We'll call it a draw. Goodnight, mein dickie old chums!

    9. Hello anon, the trend isn't really going the right way. This poll is no different to many eve of referendum polls. It indicates zero progress in two years, despite brexit. Bad news for SNP. They were hoping for a game changer. It didn't come.

As for the make up of the poll, a sizeable proportion of those living in Scotland were born outside of it. Not sure the exact percentage, but it's a significant number of people.

"The US has rebuffed attempts by Liam Fox to open negotiations on a free trade deal, saying that meaningful talks before a Brexit were impossible."

It's all going splendidly for the witless tory incompetents, isn't it?

No wonder the US State Department laughed when Boris of the 3 stooges was announced as Foreign Secreteary.

A joke of a government that will collapse into petulant Brexit factionalism and backstabbing as it becomes ever more clear they don't have the slightest fucking idea what to do or how they would do it even if they did.

The inept directionless void of May's 'administration' of third raters is making the Cameroon's infamous short-termism look like a 1000 year plan.
